Release Notes Firmware 3.1 Release Notes Firmware 3.1 Milestone 311 Daisy Speakout 1. Speakout software Speakout software is included. It will automatically show up as additional selector point if the Speakout hardware is entered into Milestone. For more information please consult the instruction manual of Speakout. 2. DAISY software There is *one* firmware for all Milestone players as from now on. This simplifies distribution, since all customers can receive the same file for upgradeing. If DAISY has not been bought for the Milestone being upgraded, DAISY won‘t show up as selector menu point. 3. SD HC cards The new standard SD HC (Secured Digital High Capacity) of SD memory cards is fully supported. Therefore, any SD card on the market can be used with Milestone. Currently, up to 8GB cards are available. Some of these cards have been tested and they work fine. We suggest, however, not to purchase cheap no-name SD cards, as these often work very slowly or, even worse, are not reliable. Technical hint: Huge SD cards, such as 2, 4 or 8 GB have many memory blocks to handle. This slows down recording operations considerably, if these cards have lots of data on it already. Operations on such cards gain speed again, if the card is formatted or defragmented via PC. What also helps a lot to gain speed is formating the card into big clusters. For details, type „help format“ on a DOS window on a PC. The option „/A:8192“ helps a lot. 4. Pause during record A pause function during long records has been introduced. During a long record, a quick press of the PLAY button pauses the record, a second press of PLAY continues the record. Please press PLAY gently, as otherwise mechanical noise of your fingers will sound strong on the record. The long record is terminated pressing REC (like before). A time out of 30 minutes has been included. After this pause time, the record is ended, to avoid a complete dry run of battery. Also, if the battery reaches level 4 (immediate recharge) during pause, the record will be terminated. 5. DAISY: Include more tolerances Tolerance against faulty DAISY books have been introduced. Examples include books with missing title information, books with missing header depth, books with not consistent lower/upper case usage of file names, etc. Particularly robot-generated DAISY books sometimes miss mandatory DAISY attributes, such as title indication or header depth. Thousands of books were found with such mistakes. 6. DAISY: Resume DAISY resumes at the book which was listened to, before Milestone fell into sleep mode. Before, it resumed at the first book alphabetically found on an SD card. Please note that the resume position is only written back to the book when Milestone falls into sleep mode, changes to internal memory, changes to another book or USB is attached. If the SD is removed during playback (even if PLAY has been pressed to stop reading), the resume position won‘t be saved. 7. DAISY: Bookmarks Bookmarks are created very quickly now. Before, it could take up to a minute. This was particularly annoying when trying to change book or switching into another mode, e.g., the voice recorder. 8. USB: MacIntosh Eject The current Mac OS X 10.4 has had the USB eject command changed by Apple Computer. This led to the situation that Milestone could not be properly ejected from Mac computers. Now Milestone handles the eject command in any case.
