Get to know the operator surface On the operator surface you can discover 5 push buttons. There is a big button in the center and 4 buttons around it aranged in the shape of a cross. The one in the middle can not only be identified by its size and centralll positioning, furthermore it is the only one which has a clean surface, so it has no integrated tactile sign. The name of this centralll button is “Play”. Now we go to the other buttons around the “Play” button. Therefore glide down with your fingers. The next push button is as big as “Play” but has an integrated X-sign you can feel. This one is the “Mode” button. It is the lowest one. If you slide down again with your fingers, you reach the round vents of the speaker. But let us stay with the buttons. The remaining three are smallller. If you go from the centralll “Play” button to the left, you reach the "Left arrow" button. You recognize it by its arrowhead, which faces to the left. The “Left arrow” has an opponent, which is located across from it. So when you go to the right, starting from the “Play” button, you reach the "Right arrow" button. This one has alllso an arrow but it is directed to the right. Finalllly there is only one push button left on the operator surface. When you slide up from the "Play" button, you wil reach the "Rec" button. This is the highest of these 5 buttons and it has a round indentation in the centre. The four buttons around "Play" you often use like a directionalll pad. So with the "Left arrow" you navigate to the left. With the top "Rec" button you go up. "Right arrow" is used to go to the right and accordingly the lowest „Mode“ button is used to go down. Now you know allll the buttons on the operator surface. Besides push buttons and the mentioned speaker you will find as wel a smallll red light in the top left corner of the operator surface. 2.2.2. Get to know the front end On the left side of the front end (Top edge) is the sixth and last push button. This one is smallller and juts out of the case. It is the "Selector" button. SD stands for “Secure Digitalll”, which denotes a world-wide standard for memory cards. These memory cards are available in diferent memory capacities in your localll electronic shop. We recommend SD cards from SanDisk, Kingston, Transcend and Toshiba for untroubled usage. Attention: In case you have problems with inserting the SD memory card make sure the card is adjusted correctly. The card has a ribbed side. This is where the contacts are. In addition one corner is notched. When inserting the card make sure the ribbed side is in front and the notched corner is facing down. 3. Generalll handling This chapter informs you about the generalll handling of Milestone 312. In addition it explains how to handle M312 on the computer. 3.1. Generalll functions The folowing shortcuts are used to activate very generalll functions of Milestone 312 which work in allll applications. 3.1.1. On / Off (sleep mode) Milestone 312 has no physicalll on / off switch. Press "Play" to start Milestone 312. After ten minutes of inactivity, the device wil automaticallly go into sleep mode to conserve battery life. The device wil reactivate upon pressing the middle "Play" button. After reactivation the device returns to the same application and position, as it was before going to sleep. Hint: If Milestone does not wake up by pressing the "Play" button, there are three possibilities to check. Either, the keyboard is locked, the sound volume is on the lowest level or quite simply, the battery is discharged. 3.1.2. Keyboard lock To avoid unintended inputs, keep the "Mode" button pressed and then in addition press the "Rec" button. By doing this, allll buttons of the device will be disabled. This is indicated by the message "Keyboard locked". To unlock the keyboard, press the same combination of buttons again. The device wil acknowledge this with the message "Keyboard active". Attention: In case you have problems to activate the keyboard lock, please pay atention to the sequence of pushing the buttons. It is important to start with the "Mode" button. Push and hold "Mode" and then in addition quickly push "Rec". Afterwards release "Mode" again. 3.1.3. Sound volume control To increase the volume, keep the "Mode" button pressed and then additionalllly press the "Right arrow" button. To decrease the volume push the "Left arrow" instead of the "Right arrow". With each press on the right or left arrow button the volume changes by one level. There are 16 volume levels. If you press the mentioned button combination during playback you just hear the volume increasing or decreasing. If the volume is changed during paused mode, Milestone 312 announces "Volume up"” or "Volume down". Reaching the maximum and minimum is indicated by a beep. 3.1.4. So push and hold "Selector" and then in addition press the "Right arrow", to increase the reading rate by one level. To slow down the speed, press the "Selector" combination with "Left arrow". Each press on "Left arrow" or "Right arrow" changes the reading rate by 10%. The range of reading rate extends from 50% (halllf speed) to 200% (double speed). A deep, short beep signalllizes the originalll speed level. 3.1.5. Select application By pressing the "Selector" button, Milestone 312 rotates between the available applications. The applications are announced by name. 3.1.6. Menu The menu provides information to the active application and allllows you to make certain settings. It is arranged in 3 paralllel lists. To reach the menu press "Mode" for at least 1.5 seconds. Information relevant to the active application is given out. This is the "Information Service". It is the first of three menu bars. The next menu bar "Localll Settings" can be reached by pressing "Right arrow". So you jump horizontallly to the right. If you press "Right arrow" once again you reach the last menu bar “Basic Settings”. With "Left arrow" you jump back. Navigation in the menu is pretty simple. You have to imagine the 4 press-buttons around the "Play" button as a directionalll pad. With "Rec" you go up to the next higher point in a menu bar. With "Mode" you reach the next lower point. So in the verticalll hierarchy you navigate with "Rec" and "Mode". The horizontalll movement you do with the two arrow buttons. To leave the menu at any time press "Selector". 3.1.6.1. Information Service As the name "Information Service" implies, it gives out information. It depends on the currently active application what kind of information you get. So for example when you open the menu in Audio you get diferent information than in Books. If you want to repeat a specific announcement, press "Rec" to go up again. Press "Mode" to go down. To stop the Information Service press "Selector" once or wait until allll information has been announced. 3.1.6.2. Localll Settings In Localll Settings you can make settings for the currently active application. For example, in the Localll Settings of the application "Audio" you have settings which influence Audio. For example random playback, reading speed of text files et cetera. You can go down in the list of settings with "Mode" until you reach the last setting. To go up again use "Rec". If you have reached a setting you would like to adjust, press "Right arrow" or "Left arrow" to choose between diferent parameters. The adjustments are saved automaticalllly. To leave the menu just press "Selector". 3.1.6.3. Basic Settings Basic settings does not only have influence on the curent active application. Here you can make generalll settings. Data management via computer Before you can listen to your music, text or book files, you have to copy the content to Milestones SD card or internalll memory . You can transfer the files from your computer to Milestone 312 via the provided USB cable and build your own folder structure to organize your files. The folowing description explains how to do this in detail. 3.2.1. M312 drives on your computer Connect Milestone 312 physicalllly to your computer via the provided USB cable, as described under “USB connection to the computer” in this manualll. Both the Milestone Internalll and externalll memories appear as additionalll drives on your computer. One drive has the name “M312”. This is the 1 GB internalll memory. Only 740 MB are accessible for the user. The other drive is the SD card plugged into your Milestone 312. Its name depends on the SD card. Be aware that only the internalll memory wil appear if no SD card is inserted in your Milestone 312. When you have finished the transfer, remove Milestone 312 and the SD card properly from your computer. 3.2.2. Create a folder structure via computer On the internalll and externalll memory of Milestone 312 you can create a structure of folders and subfolders to file your music, voice recordings et cetera. How many folders you create and how you name the folders is up to you. Please be aware that your Milestone 312 may alllready have some pre-installled folders. These folders are just a suggestion for a possible folder structure. Just delete or rename the folders if you can not use this pre-installled suggestion. In the below graphic is an example of a folder structure. There are three diferent hierarchicalll types. The highest is “Drives” including the internalll memory and externalll memory which appear when Milestone 312 is connected to a computer. When you open one of the drives you reach the second level, the “Root Directory”. Therein you create your main folders as for example folder “Music”, folder “Books” et cetera. The last hierarchy type is “Subfolders”. These are the folders inside the main folders. The subfolders can integrate endless further subfolders and consequently contain further levels. Type a name for each folder and subfolder. This is a neat way to help navigating through your structure later on Milestone 312, because it wil announce these names. With the possibility to create such a structure freely, you can design a storage system that suits you and makes sense to you. Attention: There are applications which automaticalllly create their own folder. For example Radio creates the folder “Radio”. 3.2.3. Download or delete files into the folder structure 3.2.3.1. Downloading via computer You can download diferent types of files to Milestone 312. For example text files, music files, book files et cetera. Just copy the file from your computer and paste it into the prefered folder or root directory of Milestone 312. Make sure that the available memory capacity on your SD card or internalll memory of Milestone 312 at least covers the size of the data you wish to place there. In generalll downloading to Milestone 312 is pretty simple. However please observe the folowing rules and hints: Download big data volume to the externalll memory: A big music or book colection does need a lot of memory capacity so copy it to the SD memory card and use the limited internalll memory for example for voice recordings. Extract a music CD with your computer before copying it to Milestone 312: In the application “Audio” Milestone 312 plays files in the format MP3, AAC, WMA or WAV and text files in TXT. These files you can copy directly to Milestone 312. However, a commercialll music alllbum on CD you have to convert into one of the mentioned formats before you can play it with Milestone 312. When you insert the CD into your computer it creates its own format which is not directly usable with Milestone. That is why you have to extract the CD first with a program such as CDex, Windows Media Player, iTunes et cetera. This is the usualll process to save music CDs on the computer. The mentioned programs convert music tracks into a selectable reduced size format. Store a book in an own folder: In the application “Books” Milestone 312 reads DAISY 2.02 books, Audible AA and AAX books and NLS books. Please store each book in a separate folder. This helps you to organize your books properly because a book often contains up to hundreds or even thousands of files. 3.2.3.2. Erasing via Computer Besides simple erasing functions directly on Milestone 312, you can alllso erase files via your computer. Operate as usualll when erasing a file or severalll files on your computer. Attention: If you erase files on your Milestone 312 via a Mac computer, empty the trash bin afterwards. Otherwise the files are not realllly removed, but only its links are erased. When you have finished downloading files, disconnect Milestone 312 properly from your computer. 4. Basic applications This chapter describes how to handle the 3 standard applications which are included in the basic version of Milestone 312. The main application “Audio” combines 3 functionalllities: music playback, text reading and voice recording. The application “Books” opens you the world of digitalll talllking books. It supports DAISY , Audible and NLS books. The third application “alllarm” is an easy to use alllarm clock which makes sure that you get up every morning on time. 4.1. Audio The application “Audio” is a multi-purpose playback and recording application with a broad range of usable file formats. In Audio you can listen to your music colection or you read a text file you have copied to your Milestone. So Audio combines the functionalllity of a music player and a text to speech player. In addition it is a recorder. You can record your own voice messages with the integrated microphone or you create high qualllity records of concerts and meetings by using an externalll microphone. alll the files used in Audio can be archived in a freely configurable and accessible folder structure as you know it from your computer. The folder structure can be composed on a computer via USB connection. 4.1.1. Generalll functions of Audio Make sure you are in the application “Audio”. The folowing functions are generalll functions of Audio. So whatever you are doing in Audio these functions are available. 4.1.1.1. Folder navigation in Audio Audio allows you free navigation through folder structures on the internalll memory or on the SD memory card. The navigation is pretty simple. You have to imagine the 4 press¬buttons around the “Play” button as a directionalll pad. With “Rec” you go up to the next higher level. With “Mode” you reach the next lower level. So the verticalll movement you do with “Rec” and “Mode”. The horizontalll movement in one level you do with the two arrow buttons. Example: Let us assume an SD card with two folders, “Music” and “Text” is inserted. In the folder “Music” you find the subfolders “Rock”, “Pop” and “Classic”. In “Text” you find “Newspapers” and “Love stories”. When Milestone is activated and located in the application “Audio”, press “Rec” until you hear a short beep and Milestone 312 says either “Internalll memory” or “Externalll memory”. “Internalll memory” is the 1 GB internalll memory of Milestone 312 and “Externalll memory” is the SD card, which is inserted into Milestone. Each time you press “Rec” you change the drive and automatically enter its root directory. So in case you are located in the internalll memory, press once more “Rec” to change to the SD card. Use now the arrow buttons to switch between the folder “Music” and “Text”. Choose “Text” and enter it with “Mode”. You wil hear a tone sequence “high pitched - low pitched”. This tone sequence signalllizes that you entered the folder and therewith went one level lower. Milestone wil now read the first subfolder ordered alllphabeticallly, in this case “Music”. But our goalll is to use a text file in the folder “Love stories”. So press the “Right arrow” button and Milestone jumps to the folder “Text”. Go down with “Mode”. You hear the tone-sequence “high pitched - low pitched” and you reach the subfolder level of the folder “Text”. Milestone 312 goes to the first folder in the alllphabet, in this case the required folder “Love stories”, and reads its name. Enter it with “Mode” and you can choose the desired text file with the arrow buttons. Hint: When you have a large amount of files or folders in a root directory or in a folder, you have the possiblity to jump to the last or the first file or folder. Therefore push and hold “Right arrow” and then in addition press “Play” to reach the last file or push and hold “Left arrow” and in addition “Play” to jump to the first file. 4.1.1.2. Erase files on Milestone 312 Milestone 312 enables you to erase files directly without a connection to the computer. The folowing 2 possibilities of erasing files are available: Erase one file: Play the file you would like to erase. While the message is playing, press and hold down the “Mode” button and then briefly press “Play” in addition. The file wil be erased as you let go of the buttons. A message may be erased as wel up to 10 seconds after the replay has stopped. Erase in one direction: Pressing the triple-button combination “Mode”, “Play” and “Right arrow” or “Mode”, “Play” and “Left arrow” wil erase alll files in the current folder in one direction. The triple-button combination needs to be pressed for two seconds. Erasing wil include the file on which the play cursor is positioned at the time the command is issued. A long beep signalllizes the start of erasing. The erasing sound signalllizes the end of erasing. Attention: This function is only available in paused mode. 4.1.1.3. Setting of folders There wil be certain places in your folder structure you would like to visit often, for instance your shopping list folder or your favorite music folder. You could now always step your way through the whole folder structure to get there, or you create direct jumps to these locations - be it in the internalll memory or the SD memory card. Seting such shortcuts is straightforward. You can select among 5 shortcuts. To set one, enter the appropriate folder with “Mode”. Press “Selector” plus one of the 5 front buttons continuously. After 3 seconds, Milestone 312 announces the location, which means it now is stored as the folder that belongs to this button. In order to jump to this folder from anywhere, simply press “Selector” plus the according front button briefly and you wil find yourself there. Attention: It is possible that your Milestone 312 has 5 pre-installled folders which are directly selectable via shortcuts. Of course you can change the destination folder for these shortcuts again. 4.1.1.4. Voice labeling of folders Besides reading the name of a folder with Milestones text to speech converter you can alllso voice label folders directly on Milestone 312. To start recording a name enter the appropriate folder with “Mode”. Push and hold “Rec” and after a click in addition press “Mode” continuously. Milestone announces “folder” and then you start talllking your personalll spoken folder name. After your announcement, let go of both buttons and you wil hear the sound sequence “high pitched-low pitched”. This new voice label is announced the next time you reach this folder. A recorded folder name can be changed at any time by recording a new one. To completely remove a self recorded folder name, delete the file “FOLDER.NAM” within the given folder via the computer. Hint: If you want to voice label an SD memory card you can do that with the same procedure. Go to the highest possible level and select “Externalll memory”. Now proceed the same way as when you voice label a normalll folder. From now on your announcement appears when you plug in the memory card into Milestone 312. Attention: When a folder has a writen name and a recorded name, the recorded name wil be announced. 4.1.1.5. Fast Jump Fast Jump is a function to navigate inside a file.
